With thousands of infants injured each year due to Caesarean births, why are mothers not warned of risks? By Tanith CareyMatthew Watson is only two years old, but already he has what his mother Wendy calls 'a war wound' - a 3 1/2in scar which runs from his eyebrow up to his hairline. It is the legacy of an accident during his Caesarean birth when a surgeon dropped a surgical instrument on his head. An isolated case? Far from it - Matthew is one of an estimated 3,000 newborns injured during the procedure every year in the UK, and with the Caesarean rate rising, it is likely the number affected will also increase.
