My Philosophy

To quote Carla Hartley, I believe “Birth is safe; Interference is risky” (trustbirth.com).  I know the female body is designed to give birth whether or not anyone else is present.  I believe babies deserve a peaceful entry into the world.  I believe each mother knows best how to birth her baby and she deserves to have a birth team who works hard to empower her and protect her in that process.  She needs to be surrounded by people who will be patient with her body, her baby, and her progress in a natural labor.  More importantly, she needs to be surrounded by people who believe in her.  Pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are natural, normal functions of a woman’s mind, body emotions and spirit, all of which are equally important.

As a midwife, I seek to nurture a woman’s sense of personal strength and self confidence so that she may realize birth as an empowering experience.  Hence, the name of my practice.  When birth is integrated into life as a family event, the family is strengthened as well.  I do not “deliver” or even “catch” babies, but rather I assist and support a woman as she gives birth.

I believe that the things which matter most in creating a physically healthy pregnancy are those things you have the most control over:  good nutrition and exercise.  On an emotional, psychological and spiritual level, I recognize that birth is not an event which is isolated in a woman’s life.  So much of who you are, what you have experienced, and what you believe will influence how you give birth.  This is your time and your family you are creating.  Empowering you to make the best decisions for yourself is my highest goal.            ~ Alexandra Orchard
